School’s IN session in Storyland!

Little Red School House is back in City Park’s Storyland

With a huge thanks to sponsor Entergy New Orleans, New Orleans City Park is thrilled to announce the Little Red School House is now back in Storyland. The new school house replaces a smaller version that was removed from Storyland a few years ago.

Click here to check out a construction photo and to see what the earlier version of the Little Red School House looked like.

Situated in Storyland between the Jack and Jill slide and the Old King Cole display, the new school house boasts more space for more kids to play school, a teacher’s desk with two smaller student desks, a chalk board for kids to scribble with chalk, and a school-bell to ring. There is also a dedicated space with a picnic table just outside of the school house’s front door. The space is also air conditioned.

The Little Red School House is available to rent for birthday parties. To get more information on Birthday Parties at City Park, please contact Teresa at (504) 483-9458 or tcuellar@nocp.org or visit this link.

Trees for Wildlife in City Park

Image

On May 24, middle school students from KIPP Central City Academy joined City Park’s volunteer manager, Earl, in planting 500 bald cypress trees in the Park’s Couturie Forest.  The trees were generously provided by the National Wildlife Federation’s Trees for Wildlife program

Image

Despite the ant hills and the warm weather, the student volunteers had a great time learning about the importance of trees while clearing ragweed and then planting the bare root bald cypress.  As these trees grow taller, they will help increase the tree canopy of Couturie Forest and out-compete invasive species, like Giant Ragweed, that took over the Forest after Hurricane Katrina.  The students also learned lots about how to take care of trees.

Thanks to the National Wildlife Federation and to KIPP Central Academy for making City Park a better park for people and wildlife!

Don’t be a square! Instagram your park photos!

Image

Hi! Geneva here. I wanted to share with you one of the great joys I have found in the Park. I have been an amateur photographer my whole life. I also feel like I have owned a camera, of some kind, my whole life. While in college I took photography classes and learned to process my own pictures. Let’s just say I love taking pictures and the Park is the perfect place to take pictures.

 Image

There are many good photography apps available but the most well-known is probably Instagram. Instagram is an online photo-sharing, video-sharing and social networking service that enables its users to take pictures and videos, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and Flickr. A distinctive feature is that it confines photos to a square shape, similar to Polaroid images, in contrast to the 16:9 aspect ratio now typically used by mobile device cameras.  Due to some early issues concerning the rights of your photos it took me a while to become an ‘iger’ but now I love Instagram and most of the pictures in my account are taken in the park. I use an HTC One as my phone/camera and l love the quality of photos I am able to achieve.

Image

 Image

I have even created a collage on my office door of my Instagram pictures from the Park. On Instagram, you can find me at @nevanicole or the Park at  @neworleanscitypark.

The Park is currently hosting a photography contest. Employees can’t enter the contest, but you can! Click here for details, rules, and the necessary forms. The contest’s theme is The Spirit of City Park. With the Park looking so great this Spring, the staff can’t wait to see all the creative photo submissions.

Get Caught up in Fishing City Park : a BIG fish caught just moments ago!

Image

Caught just moments ago!

City Park is great for fishing! There are many types of fish in our waterways and we encourage catch and release. Check out our Fishing Guide for more information. Grab your LA fishing licence and your gear and find a spot to fish along our 22 miles of shoreline. If you think you catch a record breaking fish, you’ll need to follow these guidelines to get the info to the Park.

Pictured: Tim Zissis holding the fish he caught today (4/17/14) in City Park. Tim is the current Bass Fish Record Holder in City Park with a 9.05 lb bass he caught in August of 2013.

They’re coming! The Wildflowers are coming!

Everyone remembers last year’s field of delicate orange flowers at the corner of Roosevelt Mall and Marconi. Great News -they’ll be back this year … times two!

Image

We’re tilling the soil and planting the seeds! This second field of wildflowers will be just across Roosevelt Mall from the original field (which will be blooming soon, too!). The new field will have the added bonus of a walking path through the field so no flowers will get squashed underfoot by visitors.

NOLA Bike To Work Day was FUN at City Park!

NOLA Bike to Work Day was launched in 2012 to raise awareness about the benefits of biking and about regional developments that are making biking easier and safer for riders.

Some of our employees were able to participate:

City Park’s miles of bike paths take riders from Bayou St. John to Lake Pontchartrain. Plus there are trails around Big Lake (3/4 of a mile) and the Festival Grounds (1 mile) not to mention countless other places in the 1300 acres that is New Orleans City Park.

No bike? No problem. Bikes can be rented from the City Park Boat House on Big Lake. Take s troll with a friend on a tandum bike. Have fun on a surrey bike with a canopy. Check out our Boating and Biking page on our website for details and prices.
